In this article I will give a comparision between RF and RFID .

RFID stands for Radio-Frequency IDentification. The acronym refers to a small electronic devices that consist of a small chip .It is used in the slap and ship environment ,where in the RFID chip is slapped on the package and shipped.

The biggest advantage if RFID is that it does not need to be in the line of vision of the scanner.RFID devices will work within a few feet (up to 20 feet for high-frequency devices)of the scanner without being in direct line of vision. For example, you could just put all of your groceries or purchases in a bag, and set the bag on the scanner. It would be able to query all of the RFID devices and total your purchase immediately. This makes RFID method very time efficient .

But there are some disadvantages using RFID too.

Global standard are still being worked upon and currently RFID has been implemented in different ways by different manufacturers.Reader collision occurs when the signals from two or more readers overlap. The tag is unable to respond to simultaneous queries.

It is not cost effective as compared to barcode labels which is a big limitation in going for RFID solution. The pricing of RFID is based on volume, the amount of memory on the tag and the packaging of the tag (whether it’s encased in plastic or embedded in a label.

Imagine if the cost of manufacturing a sigle RFID chip is between 7-15 cents ,the bar code solution provides much more cost effective alternative as it hardly costs any thing to print a paper label to use for similar functionality .

     RF (RF Scanner)

As against using RFID device we have another method of accessing information on products which is via RF scanner or Radio Frequency scanner.RF scanners read, store and distribute electronic barcode information from packaging and labels. The information contained within the barcode allows for tracking of the product during shipping, inventory management and warehousing.

For the the Bar code label needs to be in alignment with the RF scanner device .The bar codes are printed with different global standards , EAN128 being one of them which is used to print barcodes in SSCC standards.

reference for SSCC defination taken from wikipedia -The serial shipping container code (SSCC) is an 18-digit number used to identify logistics units. The SSCC is often encoded in a barcode, generally GS1-128, and used in electronic commerce transactions

Note that The SSCC can be encoded in an RFID tag in order to automate the reading process.

Please refer topics on HUM and SUM on how SSCC barcodes are used in SAP
